Swedish prisoners have arrived in Estonia to relieve pressure on prisons
The first Swedish prisoners have now landed in Estonia. This is part of a new agreement between Sweden and Estonia aimed at reducing the heavy burden on the Swedish prison system. The Swedish Prison and Probation Service has for some time faced problems with a lack of space due to the increased number of inmates.
Although the project has now started, its implementation has encountered certain challenges. According to reports, more than half of the prisoners who were considered for the transfer have been rejected. There are strict criteria for who can be sent to Estonian prisons, which has made the selection process more complicated than originally intended.
The transfer of prisoners is a temporary solution to an acute situation. The Swedish government and the Prison and Probation Service are simultaneously working to expand the number of places within the country to eventually be able to handle the situation on their own. The Estonian cooperation is seen as a way to buy time while new facilities are planned and built in Sweden.
This is the first time that Sweden has rented prison places in another country on such a large scale. The authorities are now closely monitoring how the cooperation works in practice to see if the model can be sustainable over a longer period. The issue of prison care abroad has sparked debate, but the government emphasizes that safety and the need for more places are the top priority.
