Sharp increase in TBE cases in Sweden
The number of people infected with the TBE virus in Sweden has increased significantly this year. According to statistics from Sveriges Radio, 213 people have been infected so far, which is a clear increase compared to previous years.
To put the numbers into perspective, one can compare them with the same period over the last few years. In 2024, the number of infected people was 111, and in 2025, 138 cases were reported. The current statistics therefore show a significant rise of the virus in the country.
TBE, or tick-borne encephalitis, is a viral disease spread through tick bites. The disease can affect the central nervous system and cause inflammation of the brain or the membranes surrounding the brain. Symptoms often begin as flu-like ailments, but can in some cases become serious.
Authorities and experts often recommend vaccination for people who spend a lot of time in nature, especially in areas where the virus is common. By getting vaccinated, one can obtain effective protection against the disease.
It is important to be mindful of ticks when moving through forests and fields. Wearing full-coverage clothing and checking the skin after being outdoors are simple ways to reduce the risk of bites. For questions about vaccination, one should contact their local health center.
