Millions of children subjected to sexual abuse online
A new report from the UN Children's Fund, UNICEF, highlights a frightening global trend. According to the report, approximately 20 million children are subjected to sexual abuse on the internet every year. The problem is growing as children spend more time online, which places great demands on both parents and technology companies.
Experts believe that the internet has become an arena where perpetrators can more easily get in touch with children. It often involves children being lured into conversations where they are then pressured or threatened into sharing sensitive material. This is a phenomenon that also affects children in Sweden, where the police are seeing an increase in reports regarding online abuse.
To protect young users, UNICEF emphasizes the importance of better legislation and stricter requirements for social media. It is not enough for parents to talk to their children about safety; the companies that own the platforms must take greater responsibility for stopping the spread of harmful content and identifying suspicious accounts.
In Sweden, authorities and organizations are working intensively to spread knowledge about how to act safely online. Schools and guardians are encouraged to be more involved in children's digital lives in order to detect warning signs in time. Talking openly about the risks is one of the most important steps to increase safety for children and young people in the digital world.
