Sharp increase in TBE cases in Sweden
The number of people infected with the TBE virus in Sweden has increased significantly this year. So far, 213 cases have been reported, which is a clear increase compared to previous years.
To put the figures into perspective, one can look at the same period during recent years. In 2024, 111 people were infected, and in 2025, the number was 138 cases. The current statistics therefore show that the spread of the virus has become significantly more extensive than before.
TBE, or tick-borne encephalitis, is spread via tick bites. The virus can cause inflammation of the brain or the meninges, which means that many of those affected require hospital care. Experts emphasize the importance of being vigilant when spending time in nature.
To protect against TBE, the Public Health Agency recommends vaccination. This is particularly important for people who live or spend time in areas where the virus is common, primarily in southern and central Sweden.
The authorities are now closely monitoring the development to see if the trend continues. Residents are urged to check their vaccination status and to wear full-coverage clothing when visiting forests and fields to reduce the risk of tick bites.
