The Moderate Party wants to allow background checks in dating apps
The Moderate Party is now proposing a legislative change that would make it possible for dating apps to check the backgrounds of their users. The purpose of the proposal is to increase safety for people who use digital services to meet new people.
Today, there are strict rules regarding how companies may handle personal data and criminal records. According to the Moderate Party, current legislation creates obstacles for dating companies that want to verify that their users have not been convicted of serious crimes. By giving companies access to limited information, the party hopes to reduce the risk of harassment and violence.
The proposal entails that dating apps could link user accounts with information from the Swedish Police Authority. If a person has been convicted of, for example, sexual offenses or violent crimes, the app could flag the user or suspend the account. This would provide a safer environment for the many Swedes who use apps like Tinder or Bumble.
Critics, however, point out that the proposal raises questions about personal privacy. Giving private companies access to sensitive information about individuals is a delicate issue in Sweden, where the protection of personal privacy is strong. There is also a discussion about whether such a check is truly effective or if it creates a false sense of security.
The government and relevant authorities will now need to investigate how such a legislative change could be designed without violating fundamental rights. The debate regarding safety versus online privacy is expected to continue in the coming period.
