Breast Cancer Screening: Canton of Lucerne Introduces New Early Detection Program
In Switzerland, there are significant differences in breast cancer screening. While many cantons already have systematic early detection programs, Central Switzerland lags behind in this area. This is now set to change, as the Canton of Lucerne is planning a new screening program for women.
In the so-called mammography screening method, women of a certain age are regularly invited for an X-ray examination of the breast. The goal of these tests is to detect malignant tumors as early as possible. When the disease is found at an early stage, the chances of recovery are often significantly better, and treatment is usually less invasive.
In French-speaking Switzerland and many German-speaking cantons, these organized programs have long been part of the medical standard. In Central Switzerland, however, the offering has been less structured until now. The Canton of Lucerne now wants to close this gap to better protect the health of women in the region.
Starting in July 2026, the Canton of Lucerne will launch its own program. All women of the relevant age will then receive an official invitation for the examination. Previously, women in Lucerne often had to arrange appointments themselves. With the new program, access to screening will become easier and more uniform for all female residents.
Experts welcome this step by the canton. They emphasize that systematic programs are more effective than individual examinations because they reach more people. The introduction in Lucerne closes an important gap in medical care in Central Switzerland, which can save lives in the long term.
