Merz proposes special EU status for Ukraine
German politician Friedrich Merz has made a new proposal to support Ukraine. He wants the country to be granted a special status within the European Union (EU). This is intended to strengthen the link between the EU and Ukraine while the war in the country continues.
An important part of this proposal is the so-called mutual assistance clause. This means that EU member states would have to help Ukraine if the country is attacked. Normally, this rule only applies to countries that are already full members of the EU. Merz now wants to extend this security to Ukraine as well, in order to better protect the country.
The war in Ukraine has now been going on for more than four years. The political discussion about the country's future is therefore very important. A special status could be an intermediate step before Ukraine officially becomes a full member of the European Union. This would give the country more political stability and send a clear signal to Russia.
While politicians talk about new treaties, the situation for the civilian population on the ground remains extremely difficult. Many people in the Ukraine continue to need daily support. Organizations such as the Swiss "Swiss Solidarity" continue to collect donations. The money is used for food, medicine, and other essential relief supplies that people in the affected areas urgently need.
Merz's proposal shows how important Ukraine has become for security throughout Europe. However, many questions remain to be clarified regarding exactly what such a special status would look like legally. In the coming weeks, European politicians will certainly continue to discuss this topic intensively.
