Parliament secures funding for the Red Cross Museum in Geneva
The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum in Geneva can breathe a sigh of relief. In a close vote, the National Council decided to maintain state funding for the cultural institution. This secures the future of the important museum for the time being.
The museum plays a central role in the Geneva museum landscape. It documents the history and humanitarian work of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). Visitors from all over the world come there to learn about the principles of humanity and the challenges in conflict zones.
The debate in parliament was intense. Citing austerity measures, some members of parliament had demanded that subsidies for the museum be cut or eliminated entirely. However, supporters of the funding emphasized that the museum is an important part of "International Geneva" and underscores the diplomatic significance of the Geneva location.
With this decision, an important institution that is closely linked to Switzerland's humanitarian tradition is preserved. The museum will therefore continue to provide a platform for dialogue on global humanitarian issues in the future.
