Latest News: Trade Agreement, Labor Market, and Sports Highlights
The European Union has agreed on a major trade deal with the USA. Despite some criticism, the new customs deal is now being fully implemented. The reason for the quick agreement is the recent threats from the USA. With this agreement, the EU aims to secure economic benefits and avoid a larger trade conflict.
In Switzerland, there is concerning news from the labor market. The number of unemployed people has risen significantly and is almost reaching levels seen during the Corona period. Currently, about 266,000 people are looking for a job. Experts cite two main reasons for this increase and are monitoring the situation closely to make forecasts for the economic future.
There are also innovations in the social sphere: a new form of relationship is soon to be introduced in Switzerland, the so-called "Pacte civil de solidarité" (PACS). This status lies between cohabitation without a marriage certificate and marriage. At the same time, there is important information for women with endometriosis. Although the disease often causes pain and can affect fertility, reports from those affected show that pregnancy is still possible.
In sports, the Swiss national football team is in the spotlight. Coach Murat Yakin has announced his squad for the World Cup in the USA. Some well-known players like Vincent Sierro or the talent Alvyn Sanches had to stay at home. Generally, football remains a popular but also risky sport in Switzerland. There are about 40,000 accidents annually. However, since the number of licensed players is steadily growing, the sport is statistically considered safer today than in the past.
There is an unusual ban at the 2026 Giro d'Italia. The race management explicitly warns professionals against urinating in their water bottles during the race. Since fans often collect these bottles as souvenirs, this is intended to protect the health of the spectators. In Switzerland, there was also trouble on the railways: a 14-year-old cyclist was not allowed to take his bicycle on the train due to special restricted times, which led to a discussion about the rules for bicycles on public transport.
In the USA, a dangerous traffic incident occurred. A small Cessna had to make an emergency landing on a highway in the state of Arizona. A video shows the plane flying toward cars like a "wrong-way driver." Finally, a topic for travelers: many people like to take food from the hotel buffet as provisions. In principle, this is not allowed, but many Swiss hotels handle this rule differently and sometimes show leniency.
