Air conditioning in Swiss hotels: Tourists demand more comfort
There is currently a heated debate in the Swiss tourism industry regarding the amenities in hotel rooms. More and more wealthy guests from abroad are complaining that many accommodations in Switzerland do not have air conditioning. Especially during the summer months, rising temperatures are causing guests to feel uncomfortable in their rooms.
The criticism comes primarily from tourists from countries where constant indoor air conditioning is standard all year round. For these travelers, a cool room is an important part of the luxury they are accustomed to. Since they pay high prices for their overnight stays in Switzerland, they expect modern infrastructure that ensures pleasant temperatures even during summer heatwaves.
For many Swiss hotel operators, however, this demand poses a challenge. Many historic buildings in Switzerland are listed as protected heritage sites, which makes the retrofitting of air conditioning systems technically difficult and very expensive. Furthermore, many Swiss establishments place great value on sustainability and energy efficiency, which often makes the massive use of air conditioning units appear contradictory.
The industry is now facing the question of how to respond to these new needs. While some hotels are already investing in modern cooling systems, others are opting for alternative solutions such as improved insulation or special window coatings. It remains to be seen whether Switzerland can preserve its traditional charm while simultaneously meeting the growing comfort demands of international guests.
