Persistent heatwave: Switzerland has been sweating for weeks
For several weeks now, Switzerland has been experiencing an unusually long summer. The country is under a so-called blocked high-pressure system, which is ensuring stable and very warm weather conditions. In many regions, temperatures are regularly climbing above the 30-degree Celsius mark.
This weather pattern is particularly persistent because the air masses are barely able to move. While wind or changeable weather would normally provide cooling, the hot air is now remaining over the Swiss Plateau and the Alpine valleys for an extended period. This is leading to significant strain on both people and nature.
Authorities and health experts in Switzerland are therefore advising the public to exercise caution. Especially elderly people and children should avoid direct sunlight in these temperatures and ensure they drink enough fluids. Physical exertion during the midday heat should also be avoided as much as possible.
Although summer is appreciated in Switzerland, the current prolonged heat poses a challenge. Meteorologists are monitoring the situation closely to determine when the blocked weather pattern will be broken up by a low-pressure area and temperatures will return to a more comfortable level.
