Federal Prosecutor's Office: Ndrangheta showing increased interest in German-speaking Switzerland
According to the Office of the Attorney General, the Italian mafia organization Ndrangheta is increasingly active in Switzerland. In a current trial before the Federal Criminal Court, the federal prosecutor emphasized that members of the criminal organization are specifically choosing German-speaking Switzerland as a retreat and area of operation.
For a long time, Ticino was considered the preferred target for mafia structures due to its linguistic and geographical proximity to Italy. However, the investigators' new findings show a strategic shift. The perpetrators now prefer German-speaking Switzerland, as they attract less attention there and can carry out their activities with less interference.
The Office of the Attorney General is currently conducting various proceedings against individuals linked to the Ndrangheta. These groups are not only using Switzerland for logistical purposes but are also attempting to infiltrate legal economic structures. Investigators are working closely with international partner authorities to uncover and dismantle the organization's network.
Authorities warn against underestimating the danger posed by the mafia in Switzerland. Even though the Ndrangheta often remains invisible in the everyday lives of the population, its presence poses a serious challenge to the country's security. The ongoing court proceedings are intended to provide clarity on the extent of the criminal activities.
