Heatwave in Switzerland: New record in Meiringen
Switzerland is currently experiencing an extraordinary heatwave that has a firm grip on the country. Especially in the lower-lying regions, temperatures rose to extremely high levels last weekend, leading to significant strain on both people and nature.
On Sunday, a remarkable new heat record for the month of August was measured in Meiringen in the canton of Bern. As MeteoSwiss reported, the thermometer climbed to 34.6 degrees Celsius. Such a value is unusually high for this location and this time of year, underscoring the intensity of the current weather situation.
The high temperatures are part of a widespread heat period that has turned large parts of Switzerland into a "furnace." Experts are warning of the health risks associated with the persistent heat and advise avoiding physical exertion in the midday sun as well as drinking plenty of water.
Although temperatures may fluctuate slightly in the coming days, the general weather situation remains summer-hot. The authorities are monitoring the situation closely and regularly informing the public about current warning levels to ensure the safety of the citizens.
