Shopping Centers: One in Three Shops in Switzerland Is from Abroad
Anyone going shopping in Switzerland will notice a clear change. There are more and more international brands in the large shopping centers. A new study now shows how strong this trend really is. Almost one in three shops in Swiss shopping centers now belongs to a company from abroad.
The development is particularly visible in the country's largest shopping districts. In some centers, as many as 62 percent of the shops come from foreign companies. This means that in these cases, more than half of the stores have no Swiss roots. Well-known fashion brands and large chains from Europe and the USA are especially prominent.
Why are so many companies coming to Switzerland? The Swiss market is considered very stable, and people's purchasing power is high compared to other countries. It is therefore very attractive for international corporations to open new branches here. They often rent large spaces in the best locations within shopping centers.
For consumers, this means a larger selection of products, but competition for Swiss companies is becoming tougher as a result. Local shops must hold their own against the large international chains. Often, the big companies can offer better prices or spend more money on marketing due to their size.
Experts believe that this trend will continue in the near future. The Swiss shopping landscape will therefore continue to change and become even more international. In the end, the choice remains for customers whether they prefer to shop at well-known global brands or at traditional Swiss stores.
