Switzerland's dependence on Microsoft: A technical dilemma
In the modern Swiss administration and among many large companies, Microsoft is the standard. From the SRG to the SBB and various federal authorities, almost everyone relies on the software solutions of the American technology giant. This widespread usage now raises important questions regarding the country's digital sovereignty.
Experts have been discussing for some time whether Switzerland is too dependent on a single foreign provider. This dependency affects not only daily office work but also the protection of sensitive data. When a country relies almost exclusively on the products of one company, a risk arises for the long-term security and independence of its digital infrastructure.
Switching to alternative systems, such as open-source software, is, however, very difficult in practice. The transition requires not only high financial investments but also a complete adaptation of existing workflows. Many institutions argue that Microsoft products are efficient and facilitate collaboration between the various authorities.
Nevertheless, there are efforts to reduce this dependency. The discussion revolves primarily around how Switzerland can shape its own digital future without losing touch with international standards. Finding a balance between practical functionality and national security remains a challenge.
