Digital Sovereignty: Why Switzerland is so heavily dependent on Microsoft

Microsoft products play a central role in the Swiss economy and public administration. Whether it is Windows operating systems or Office programs, the software from the US tech giant is deeply embedded in almost every organization. However, this dependency is increasingly sparking discussions about the country's so-called digital sovereignty.

Digital sovereignty means that a state or organization wants to maintain full control over its data and IT systems. Experts warn, however, that it is difficult for Switzerland to break away from large international providers. The systems are so closely interconnected that switching to alternative solutions is often associated with high costs and technical effort.

Another problem is security. If an entire infrastructure is based on the software of a single provider, a concentration risk arises. Should Microsoft experience technical disruptions or political changes, Swiss authorities and companies could quickly become incapacitated. Furthermore, there is the question of how securely the sensitive data of Swiss users is actually stored with a US company.

Nevertheless, there are efforts to reduce this dependency. Some public institutions are already examining the use of open-source software, which offers more transparency and independence. However, the path to true digital independence remains long and complex, as the user-friendliness and widespread adoption of Microsoft products continue to be strong arguments for their use.
