Swiss voters reject popular initiative to limit population
On Sunday, the Swiss electorate rejected a popular initiative that called for limiting the permanent resident population to a maximum of 10 million people. Projections showed a clear 'no' to the proposal shortly after the polling stations closed.
The initiative sought to regulate immigration more strictly in order to curb population growth. Proponents argued that the country's infrastructure and natural resources were reaching their limits due to steady growth.
However, the majority of voters and the federal government spoke out against the proposal. They emphasized that such a cap could jeopardize Switzerland's economic stability. Furthermore, a strict limitation could have led to new diplomatic tensions with the European Union.
With this result, the current course in migration and economic policy remains in place. Switzerland will therefore continue to rely on a model geared toward international exchange and integration into the European single market.
