Fewer and fewer people in Switzerland belong to a church
The number of church members in Switzerland continues to fall. Current figures show that both the Catholic and the Reformed churches recorded fewer members in 2025 than in the previous year. This trend has been ongoing for some time and affects the whole of Switzerland.
The Catholic Church still counted around 2.68 million members in 2025. In 2024, the figure was 2.73 million. The Reformed Church also recorded a decline and currently has about 1.77 million members. This development highlights the social change regarding the population's religious ties.
Experts have been observing this decline in membership for years. Many people decide to leave the church for various reasons. These include financial aspects due to church tax, but also an increasing distance from church institutions and their values.
The churches are now faced with the challenge of redefining their role in modern Swiss society. They must find ways to remain relevant to people and make their offerings attractive. Whether these measures can stop the trend in the coming years remains to be seen.
