News today: Lightning strike in Dübendorf and fatal accident in Italy
In Dübendorf, a lightning strike led to a house fire, while in Italy, a teenager died in an accident involving a vehicle from Ticino. At the same time, Switzerland is becoming a meeting point for international diplomats in the Middle East conflict, and new helpers are preparing for psychological emergencies.
On Friday evening, a heavy thunderstorm in Dübendorf in the canton of Zurich triggered a fire department operation. A bolt of lightning struck a residential building directly at around 6:30 p.m., causing the roof to catch fire. The cantonal police as well as emergency services from Schutz & Rettung Zurich responded to extinguish the fire.
In Pietrasanta, Italy, a serious traffic accident involving a Swiss vehicle also occurred. A car with license plates from the canton of Ticino struck a 17-year-old boy on a scooter. The teenager died as a result of the collision.
Switzerland is currently serving as the venue for important international talks. After the Iranian army closed the Strait of Hormuz – a shipping route crucial for global oil trade – an Iranian negotiating delegation is expected in Switzerland. U.S. representatives such as Steven Witkoff and Jared Kushner are also currently in the country for diplomatic contacts.
To assist people after crises or accidents, new members are currently being trained for care teams. These specialized volunteers provide psychological first aid after distressing events such as major fires or serious traffic accidents to support those affected immediately after the incident.
