Geothermal Energy in Switzerland: Between Hope and Fear of Earthquakes
Switzerland is looking for new ways to produce clean energy. Geothermal energy plays an important role in this process. This technology uses heat from the Earth's interior to generate electricity or heating. Many experts see it as a great opportunity for a sustainable future and a move away from fossil fuels.
A major advantage of geothermal energy is its constant availability. Unlike solar or wind energy, the Earth provides heat day and night, regardless of the weather. In theory, this energy source could cover a significant portion of Switzerland's energy needs. This is why there are currently new plans, for example in the Canton of Jura, to utilize this heat deep in the ground.
However, the technology is not without risk, and there are unpleasant memories of past attempts in the Basel region. A few years ago, drilling for a geothermal project caused small earthquakes. These tremors damaged buildings and caused great uncertainty among the population. For this reason, many people view new drilling projects very critically today.
Those responsible for the current projects emphasize, however, that they have learned from the mistakes of the past. With modern technology and precise measurements, the risk of earthquakes is to be minimized. Before drilling deep into the earth, geologists examine the subsurface very closely. This is intended to ensure that energy production does not pose a danger to local residents.
Geothermal energy thus remains a central but difficult topic for Swiss energy policy. It is a balancing act between the desire for environmentally friendly energy and the safety of citizens. Whether geothermal energy will soon achieve a major breakthrough remains to be seen when the first new plants in the Jura go into operation successfully and without incident.
