Zurich SP against Daniel Jositsch: No new candidacy for the Council of States
The Social Democratic Party (SP) in the Canton of Zurich has made an important decision for the future. At a delegates' meeting, a vote was held on whether Daniel Jositsch may run for the Council of States again in 2027. The result was a surprise: the majority of members voted against him.
The vote on Tuesday evening was very close and reflects the current mood within the party. A total of 215 delegates took part in the meeting. In the end, there were 109 votes against a renewed candidacy by Jositsch and 94 votes in favor. Thus, the party has withdrawn its confidence in its long-standing representative for another term.
Daniel Jositsch is a well-known politician who has represented the Canton of Zurich in the small chamber of the Swiss Parliament for many years. He is considered experienced, but has not always been undisputed within his own party. In the past, there were often discussions about his political positions and his behavior during important elections.
As a result of this decision, the Zurich SP must now look for a new person for the 2027 elections. The party apparently wants to reorient itself in terms of personnel and enter the election campaign with a different face. Who could succeed Jositsch is completely unclear at this point.
The delegates' vote is seen as a clear signal to the party leadership. It shows that the SP grassroots in the Canton of Zurich want change. For Daniel Jositsch, this result represents a serious political defeat, as he would have liked to continue working for his party in the Council of States.
