High risk of forest fires: Switzerland issues nationwide fire ban
There is currently an acute risk of forest fires in Switzerland. Due to the persistent dry weather, authorities in many cantons have responded by issuing a nationwide ban on fires. The public is urged to refrain from lighting any open fires outdoors.
The situation is particularly critical in almost 20 regions. The highest warning level is currently in effect in the cantons of Uri and Valais, among others. The dry soil and high temperatures promote the spread of fires, which is why even small sparks or carelessly discarded cigarette butts can have devastating consequences.
The cantonal authorities are continuously monitoring the situation and adjusting protective measures as needed. The ban includes not only grilling in the forest but, in many areas, also lighting fires near forest edges. Releasing sky lanterns or setting off fireworks is also strictly prohibited in the affected zones.
Experts advise following the official information from the respective cantons closely. Anyone spending time in nature should be particularly careful and immediately call the emergency number 118 if they discover smoke or fire. The measures will remain in effect until the weather situation has eased significantly due to substantial rainfall.
