Climate change in Switzerland: Why we must build differently today
Climate change is noticeably altering Switzerland. A clear sign of this is the increase in heat days, which experts predict will occur more frequently, last longer, and become more intense. This development presents new challenges for Swiss architecture and urban planning.
In this context, climate researcher Reto Knutti warns that many buildings in Switzerland are still being planned according to outdated standards. He emphasizes that we are currently often building for the climate of yesterday instead of preparing for the climatic conditions of the future.
To maintain the quality of life in cities, construction methods must be adapted. This means that greater attention must be paid to heat protection in new buildings and renovations. This includes, for example, better insulation, more shade through greenery, or the use of materials that store less heat.
Adapting infrastructure is a vital task for the coming years. Experts are therefore calling for a rethink in the construction industry so that Switzerland remains a livable country even as temperatures rise. Protection against heat is thus becoming a central issue for Swiss building policy.
