Guterres Emphasizes Importance of Peacekeeping Forces Remaining in Lebanon
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres stated on Monday that peacekeeping forces must remain in Lebanon during the coming period. Guterres explained that the presence of these forces will remain vital and necessary even after the end of the international mission's current mandate at the end of this year.
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, known as "UNIFIL," has been operating in the border areas for many years. Its primary mission is to monitor the cessation of hostilities and support stability and security in the region, especially in light of the ongoing tensions witnessed on the Lebanese border.
In his remarks, Guterres pointed out that current security challenges make it difficult to abandon the role played by the United Nations there. He stressed that the main objective is to prevent any new military escalation and ensure the protection of civilians, which requires continued international support for this sensitive mission.
The UN Security Council is expected to soon begin discussions regarding the renewal of the international force's mission. The stability of Lebanon and the surrounding region remains a top priority for the international community, especially in light of the complex political and security circumstances the region is currently experiencing.
