Field and Humanitarian Developments in the Middle East and Diplomatic Efforts in Ukraine

The Middle East region is witnessing a new escalation in tensions, as Iran confirmed its full support for its ally, the Lebanese Hezbollah group, and demanded the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon. At the same time, the Israeli Air Force carried out airstrikes on villages in southern Lebanon after issuing warnings to residents of imminent attacks, in response to military operations carried out by the Tehran-backed group.

On another note, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he believes progress is being made in talks between Israel and Lebanon, noting that Lebanon deserves to live in peace. However, Trump directed sharp and sudden criticism at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which observers considered a weakening of Netanyahu's political position at a critical moment in the conflict.

On the humanitarian level, the United Nations announced the doubling of its flash appeal to provide urgent aid to Lebanon. The international organization requested approximately $640 million to meet the growing needs of the population, as the country suffers from the effects of war and continuous destruction resulting from the confrontations between Israel and Hezbollah.

In a related context, the World Food Programme warned that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East is pushing millions of people toward the risk of hunger. The program explained that rising fuel and transportation costs, resulting from instability, are making it more difficult for basic food items to reach those in need in the region.

Moving to the Ukrainian crisis, on day 1563 of the war, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy sent an official message to Russian President Vladimir Putin. In his message, Zelenskyy proposed holding a direct face-to-face meeting to discuss ways to end the Russian invasion that has been ongoing for more than four years.

In Europe, European Union ministers are studying a new proposal to limit the temporary protection granted to Ukrainian men of military service age. This proposal received broad support from the ministers, in a step aimed at dealing with asylum issues and encouraging citizens to return to support their country under the current circumstances.
