Mandatory summer school for students facing language issues

Starting next year, children who struggle with the German language will be required to attend summer school instead of spending the entire holiday. This decision comes after figures showed that only 17 percent of around 49,000 students lacking sufficient German language skills participated in the current voluntary program. Education Minister Christoph Wiederkehr (Neos) stated that the aim of the obligation is to ensure that all children receive the necessary support to keep up with regular lessons.

The Ministry of Education estimates that the number of participants could rise to more than 70,000 students once participation becomes mandatory. To meet the needs of the educational staff, the minister indicated that teachers may be asked to work during the summer if necessary, but he expressed confidence that a sufficient number of teachers would volunteer for the program without the need for mandatory assignments.

Teachers participating in the summer school receive a pay of around 60 euros per hour or are granted a lighter teaching load in the following academic year. According to the minister, interest among teachers is strong so far, with a number of applications exceeding the available positions. He also noted that in case of a shortage, the state should be open to hiring additional teachers to ensure that children receive support.

The new school year will also begin with the launch of a federal initiative to reduce bureaucracy. According to this plan, teachers are expected to receive 80 percent less circulars and regulatory decisions from the ministry. The goal is to reduce administrative burdens and allow schools to focus more on teaching and outcomes.

Minister Christoph Wiedeker confirmed that quality and accountability will remain essential, but he emphasized that they can be achieved with fewer regulations. He added that schools should be able to review necessary laws easily and only when needed, making the educational system more efficient for both teachers and students.
