Shocking Figures: Youth Crime Doubles, Foreign Suspects Increase
Austria recorded 538,656 criminal offenses last year, with authorities solving 53.6% of cases, according to figures presented by Interior Minister غيرهارد كارنر in Vienna.
The clearance rate showed a slight improvement compared to the previous year, and around 10,000 more suspects were identified, bringing the total to 345,095. Of these, 47.7% were foreign nationals, with most originating from Romania, followed by Syria and Germany.
غيرهارد كارنر emphasized that while Austria remains one of the safest countries globally, challenges persist. He noted that increased enforcement has led to more arrests and deportations, with approximately 3,000 convicted criminals expelled from the country last year.
While internet-related crime saw a small increase, it remained below 2023 levels. Authorities attribute this to growing public awareness and preventive campaigns that have made individuals more cautious online.
However, youth crime has emerged as a major concern. The number of suspects aged between 10 and 14 has more than doubled, with Syrian nationals particularly prominent within this group, according to officials.
To address the issue, the government plans stricter measures, including detention for repeat offenders, knife-carrying bans, and mandatory police briefings for parents. Additional security-focused case conferences and targeted operations are also expected to be introduced.
