The Dutch government will investigate the gaming platform Roblox regarding child safety and harassment concerns.

The Dutch government has announced an investigation into the popular gaming platform Roblox amid rising concerns about child safety and online harassment. The Ministry of the Interior confirmed the move following inquiries from NOS, stating that it will conduct an assessment of the platform's impact on children's rights with the aim of studying its benefits and potential risks to young users. This type of assessment has previously been used with major platforms such as Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok.

Roblox is one of the most popular platforms in the world, allowing users to create digital worlds and play within them collaboratively, with tens of millions of users worldwide, the majority of whom are children. In recent years, the platform has faced severe criticism due to the presence of violent or sexual content, as well as scams targeting children. Reports have also emerged of cases where children were exploited or financially pressured through chat functions on the platform.

The concerns are not limited to the Netherlands alone. In the United States, the state of Louisiana has filed a lawsuit against the company due to ongoing safety issues. An American law firm has also filed a lawsuit on behalf of parents whose children have been negatively affected by the platform.

For her part, interim State Secretary Van Marum from the BBB party stated in her remarks to NOS Jeugdjournaal that the digital environment is beneficial for children but carries risks, saying: "Learning, entertainment, and communication online are very valuable for children, but there is also a dark side: bullying, shocking images, unwanted communications, and health problems resulting from excessive screen use."

In response to these concerns, Roblox has launched several new safety measures, including requiring users to verify their ages (13 years and older) using facial recognition before using chat, as well as tools that give parents more control over their children's activities. However, experts warn that these measures can be circumvented if children change their ages or use pictures of other people's faces for verification.

A spokesperson for Roblox said in a statement to NOS: "We have rules that govern what users can say and create and how they behave. If we notice a violation of these rules, we warn, ban, or permanently suspend the account." He also pointed out that the platform allows children and users to report any violations through the dedicated 'Report Abuse' button.

The upcoming Dutch investigation aims to determine whether the current security systems on the Roblox platform are indeed sufficient, and whether there is a need for stricter legislation to ensure better protection for children in the digital environment.
