The Dutch government doubles the accommodation fees for Ukrainian refugees!
The Minister of Temporary Asylum and Migration, Mona Keijzer, has decided to double the monthly contribution paid by Ukrainian refugees in the Netherlands for accommodation in shelters, provided they have sufficient income. The amount paid by a single Ukrainian refugee will increase from 105 euros to 244 euros per month starting in October. Families with at least two minor children will pay up to 488 euros per month, depending on their situation.
Kaiser explained that this increase aims to help cover the operating costs of shelters, such as gas, water, and electricity. Through this measure, it seeks to reduce the gap between asylum seekers and Ukrainian refugees.
Ukrainian working refugees living in places that provide food services will pay an additional fixed fee of 252 euros. Thus, the total cost for a family consisting of two parents and two children may reach 933 euros per month.
The former Minister of Migration, Margholien Fabre, had announced her intention to increase the contributions of Ukrainian refugees, but she did not specify the amount of the increase before leaving the government.
Since January 1st, Ukrainian refugees are required to pay a monthly contribution for housing if they have an income. A study conducted by the "Hochschule Inholland" on 187 Ukrainian refugees in January showed that many of them face financial difficulties, even before the new increase was implemented, indicating the prevalence of poverty among them despite working.
