Insufficient Sidewalk Maintenance in Kaohsiung: Wheelchair Users Forced to Share the Road with Vehicles
A worrying scene recently appeared on Jianguo Road in Kaohsiung City. A man was seen pushing an elderly person in a wheelchair toward a hospital, but instead of using the designated sidewalk, they chose to walk along the edge of the slow lane where vehicles pass. This reflects the common issues of pedestrian safety and infrastructure maintenance in Taiwanese cities.
According to observations, this section of the road is not without a sidewalk, but its condition is extremely poor. The interlocking bricks used for the pavement have become uneven and damaged in many places due to years of neglect. For people pushing wheelchairs or elderly individuals with mobility issues, walking on such a sidewalk is not only physically demanding but can also cause physical discomfort due to severe jolting.
To avoid the bumpy surface, many pedestrians are forced onto the road. However, there are often a large number of motorcycles and cars passing through the slow lane, leading to dangerous close encounters between pedestrians and vehicles. This phenomenon of "pedestrians and vehicles competing for the road" not only increases the risk of traffic accidents but also causes the facilities intended to protect pedestrians to lose their intended function.
Local residents stated that the quality of sidewalks directly affects people's willingness to travel. If sidewalks are poorly designed or lack maintenance, pedestrians will naturally choose the relatively smooth asphalt surface of the road. This phenomenon illustrates that in urban planning, the consistency of road surface quality is crucial for traffic safety.
Experts point out that "roads that are easy for cars to travel on should also be easy for pedestrians to walk on." A friendly urban environment must consider the needs of all users, especially people with disabilities and the elderly. Improving the pavement quality of sidewalks and strengthening regular inspections are important tasks for the government to enhance urban living quality and traffic safety.
