Uneven Sidewalks in Kaohsiung Force Wheelchair Users into Traffic, Sparking Public Concern
Recently on Jianguo Road in Kaohsiung City, citizens witnessed a man pushing an elderly person in a wheelchair along a dangerous slow-traffic lane. Although there was a sidewalk right next to the road, it was not a safe option for those pushing wheelchairs. After the footage was shared, it sparked a heated public discussion regarding the city's pedestrian environment.
According to on-site observations, the sidewalk in that section is paved with interlocking bricks. However, due to years of neglect, the surface has become uneven and some tiles are even loose. For people pushing wheelchairs, parents with strollers, or elderly individuals with mobility issues, walking on such a sidewalk is extremely strenuous and unstable, and could even cause a wheelchair to tip over.
Many citizens have commented that this phenomenon of "smooth for cars, difficult for people" is not uncommon in Taiwan. Governments typically invest large budgets to ensure that roads for cars and motorcycles are smooth, but maintenance for pedestrian spaces is relatively insufficient. When sidewalks become difficult to navigate, vulnerable groups are often forced to risk taking the asphalt road to move more easily, competing with motor vehicles for space and increasing the risk of traffic accidents.
Transportation experts point out that a progressive city should prioritize "pedestrian right of way." In addition to increasing the width of sidewalks, it is more important to choose durable and easy-to-maintain paving materials and conduct regular inspections and repairs. Only by providing a smooth, barrier-free walking environment can the traffic safety of all citizens be truly guaranteed.
Currently, such issues are gradually receiving attention from local governments. Through citizen supervision and feedback, relevant departments hope to re-examine urban street design and improve the quality of sidewalks. Creating a pedestrian-friendly urban environment has become an indispensable and important goal in modern urban development.
