Investigations after a barrage of bomb threat reports
Schools across Germany have experienced a widespread wave of threats in recent days, with more than 830 schools receiving emails threatening bombings. Investigations by DER SPIEGEL magazine revealed that the wording of these messages was similar or identical in many cases, often including references to the organization known as "ISIS".
The messages threatened explosions inside schools, but security authorities downplayed their seriousness after a quick assessment. In Bavaria, investigators confirmed that these threats do not possess the characteristics of typical terrorist operations usually associated with extremist groups like "ISIS".
Despite the large number of messages, only a limited number of schools were closed, as the police deemed there was no real threat in most cases. In North Rhine-Westphalia alone, 285 threat messages were recorded, while Baden-Württemberg received about 180 messages in just one day.
Investigations are currently underway to determine whether these threats are part of a coordinated nationwide campaign. For his part, the Minister of Education in Rhineland-Palatinate, Sven Teuber, described these messages as "abhorrent attacks on places that are supposed to provide protection, education, and cohesion for children and young people."
