Utrecht on alert: Security area declared amid protests against asylum and fascism

The city of Utrecht is imposing special security measures on Sunday in preparation for demonstrations that may see tensions in the city center. Mayor Sharon Dijksma announced that parts of Utrecht, including the city center, will be classified as a veiligheidsrisicogebied (security risk area) from 9 AM to 9 PM. The police will be granted the authority to carry out preventive searches throughout the day to maintain order.

Two opposing groups were scheduled to organize demonstrations – an anti-fascist march and a protest by the anti-immigration movement Nederland in Opstand (NIO). Although NIO officially canceled its demonstration, authorities fear that independent participants may show up, potentially leading to confrontations. The city municipality explained that "many of the demonstrators do not have a central organization or contact, making it more difficult to ensure safety."

It is expected that members of the group Defend Netherlands will participate in the demonstrations, a far-right group known for organizing and participating in anti-immigration protests across the country. To avoid confrontations, the authorities have designated specific gathering locations: the protest Samen tegen Fascisme ('Together Against Fascism') will take place in the Moerleze Park, while participants associated with NIO and similar groups will gather in the Parkdenveld Park.

Socialist organizations have announced a counter-demonstration coinciding with the protest 'Samen tegen Fascisme', affirming their stance against right-wing extremism. The organizers emphasized their main slogan: 'Refugees are welcome, but Nazis are not.'

This security escalation comes after a series of violent incidents that accompanied previous protests involving groups such as Defend Netherlands. In a demonstration held in Houten on October 14, protesters threw fireworks, wooden pieces, and glass at other protesters and the police. Despite the protest being canceled after the emergence of extremist groups, seven people were arrested on charges of incitement, assault, and wearing masks.

In a related context, the AZC Alert Sliedrecht group canceled its planned demonstration on Saturday for security reasons. The organizers stated that they feared the presence of rioters or local youths setting off fireworks, referring to previous acts of violence in Malieveld in The Hague, where police cars were burned and several buildings were damaged. The organizers wrote on Facebook: "We regret making this decision, but the issue is so sensitive that even a peaceful protest could carry serious risks."
