GIZ joins forces with BAAC to elevate Thai agriculture to green standards and tackle global warming
The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) Thailand has partnered with the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC) to drive operations in accordance with the Thailand Taxonomy, a classification system for environmentally friendly economic activities. The key objective is to elevate Thailand's agricultural sector to be more sustainable and effectively resilient to climate change.
This collaboration involved discussions with over 70 representatives from international organizations and relevant agencies to establish guidelines for transitioning from traditional farming methods to more sustainable agriculture. The focus is on utilizing technology and innovation to help reduce environmental impact, as well as lowering greenhouse gas emissions in the agricultural sector, which is a critical factor currently affecting the yields of Thai farmers.
The Thailand Taxonomy will play a vital role in helping farmers and entrepreneurs gain easier access to green financing, which will support the transition of production processes to be environmentally friendly in accordance with international standards. Furthermore, this will create new opportunities for Thai agricultural products in global markets that are increasingly prioritizing sustainability and environmental standards.
This partnership between GIZ and the BAAC marks a significant step in preparing the Thai agricultural sector—the cornerstone of the nation's economy—to adapt and grow steadily amidst the global warming crisis. It is expected that this initiative will lead to positive changes in both the quality of life for farmers and the long-term conservation of natural resources.
