Attawit proposes 'Data Centers' be classified as Type 108 factories to regulate zoning in Thailand
Mr. Attawit Suwannapakdee has come forward to propose that the Department of Industrial Works consider classifying the data center business as a Type 108 factory, in order to enable appropriate and more organized supervision and control of area zoning.
Currently, the data center business is expanding rapidly in Thailand to support the rising demand for digital technology. However, the establishment of these data centers often raises concerns regarding high electricity consumption and land use, which can impact the environment and surrounding communities if not managed clearly.
Proposing their classification as Type 108 factories would allow government agencies to directly apply factory laws, which would make the permit application process and safety standard inspections more stringent. It would also enable the designation of appropriate areas for data center locations, ensuring they do not disturb residential or agricultural zones.
This proposal is considered a crucial issue that the government must urgently consider to create a balance between promoting the digital economy and safeguarding the quality of life for local residents. Discussions among relevant agencies must be held to reach a clear and fair conclusion for all parties involved.
