Amnesty International calls on the government to drop charges against 'Yingcheep of iLaw', citing impact on freedom of expression

Amnesty International Thailand has called on the Prime Minister and relevant agencies to drop the defamation charges against Mr. Yingcheep Atchanont, Director of the Internet Law Reform Dialogue (iLaw), stating that such legal action negatively impacts the public's right to freedom of expression.

A key reason raised by the organization is that iLaw’s work involves systematically monitoring the government's exercise of power and tracking legal processes, which serves as a vital mechanism in a democracy. The act of suing activists or watchdogs for defamation may create a climate of fear and hinder public participation.

Amnesty International further emphasized that the government should be open to criticism and listen to dissenting opinions to ensure transparency in national administration. Using the law to sue those who perform oversight functions is inconsistent with the international human rights principles that Thailand has pledged to uphold.

At present, there has been no official response or movement from the government regarding this demand. However, this issue is gaining attention from academics and civil society groups who are closely monitoring the situation of freedom in Thailand.

In summary, this situation reflects the challenges in balancing the exercise of state power with the protection of citizens' rights and freedoms, which is a significant issue currently being debated in Thai society.
