Institute of Dermatology issues health warning: Exercise caution regarding skin diseases during floods

During the flooding situation occurring in many areas of Thailand, many people are facing problems with stagnant floodwater and are forced to be in contact with water for long periods. This situation directly affects health, especially regarding skin diseases that often accompany unclean and contaminated water.

The Institute of Dermatology, Department of Medical Services, has issued advice to the public that frequently soaking in or coming into contact with floodwater can make it easier to develop skin infections. Common diseases during floods include athlete's foot, rashes, dermatitis, and bacterial or fungal infections, which, if not treated correctly, can lead to spreading wounds or severe infections.

For basic self-care, experts recommend avoiding walking through floodwater directly. If it is necessary to wade through water, boots should be worn for protection. After getting out of the water, feet or areas that came into contact with the water should be washed immediately with soap and clean water. Afterward, the body should be dried completely, especially between the toes and in damp areas, to reduce the risk of pathogen accumulation.

Furthermore, if members of the public notice any abnormalities on their skin, such as red rashes, pustules, or severe itching, and the wounds do not improve within 2-3 days, they should see a doctor or local public health official for proper treatment. Do not purchase medication to apply on your own without expert advice, as this may cause the condition to become more severe.

Taking care of your health during floods is an important matter that should not be overlooked. Protecting yourself the right way will help reduce the risk of illness and help the public get through the flood situation safely.
