Opposition leader visits Chiang Mai to monitor border drug problem
Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut, leader of the People's Party, along with his working group, traveled to Mae Ai District, Chiang Mai Province, to closely monitor the drug problem in the border area following reports regarding the activities of drug trafficking syndicates in the vicinity.
This visit took place following news of the release of Lao Ta Saenlee, an influential figure in the area, which has become a subject of significant public interest. Furthermore, Natthaphong received a summary report on the intense clashes that occurred last May between security forces and drug smugglers.
Data inspection revealed that there have been continuous attempts by syndicates in neighboring countries to smuggle crystal methamphetamine (ice) into Thailand. During the most recent clash, authorities were able to seize over 300 kilograms of crystal meth, reflecting the persistent severity of smuggling attempts along the border area.
Natthaphong emphasized that the goal of this visit is to listen to problems from local officials and citizens in order to use the information to develop systematic solutions and prevention strategies for drug proliferation, with the aim of improving safety for communities in border areas.
