Warning: New scam trend involves imposters posing as close acquaintances to solicit money transfers via apps
Currently, there are reports of scammers increasingly using technology to deceive the public, particularly by posing as acquaintances or family members to trick victims into transferring money through banking applications, causing significant financial damage to many users in Thailand.
The method commonly used by scammers involves sending messages via Line or Facebook, pretending to be a close acquaintance who is in financial distress and urgently needs help. In many cases, they use credible-looking profile pictures, causing victims to fall for the ruse and transfer money without verifying the situation first.
Government agencies and the Bank of Thailand have issued warnings for the public to exercise increased caution. If you receive a message requesting financial assistance, you should call the person directly to verify their identity before deciding to perform any transactions to prevent the loss of assets.
Furthermore, users should configure security settings in their banking applications and avoid clicking on suspicious links sent via messages. If you encounter any irregularities or become a victim of a scam, you should immediately file a report at a local police station or contact the financial fraud reporting center of the bank you use.
Being aware of scams in the digital age is crucial, as it allows us to use technology safely and reduce the risk of being deceived in our daily lives.
