Thailand Advances Nuclear Energy Strategy, Prepares to Deploy Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) to Tackle Energy Crisis
The National Committee for Peaceful Nuclear Energy (PCNE) has announced the strategic direction for nuclear energy for the year 2026, with a key objective of ensuring long-term energy security for Thailand.
The core of this strategy is preparing for the adoption of Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology as a new alternative for electricity generation. This technology is highly safe and requires less installation space compared to traditional nuclear power plants.
The primary purpose of this decision is to reduce dependence on imported fuels, as Thailand currently relies heavily on imports of natural gas and other energy sources. Turning to nuclear energy will help establish energy sovereignty and mitigate risks associated with global energy price volatility.
Furthermore, the committee has outlined a four-dimensional operational plan to prepare for infrastructure, legal frameworks, human resources, and public engagement, ensuring that this transition toward clean and sustainable energy is safe and highly efficient.
Overall, driving this strategy represents a significant step for Thailand in adapting to future energy crises, focusing on the use of advanced technology to sustainably stabilize the nation's power system.
