Thai Tilapia Association confirms that eating cooked tilapia is safe and not a cause of death
The Thai Tilapia Association has come forward to provide information to ensure a correct understanding among the public, following rumors on social media claiming that 38,000 people die each year from eating tilapia. The Association wishes to confirm that these figures are untrue and have no connection to the consumption of tilapia whatsoever.
The Association explained that tilapia is a high-quality source of protein and is very popular in Thailand. Consuming tilapia is highly safe if consumers cook it thoroughly with appropriate heat before eating, which is a basic standard for preventing germs and parasites that may contaminate all types of fresh food.
Furthermore, regarding the issue of antibiotic-resistant bacteria mentioned on social media, the Association stated that the problem of high-level antibiotic resistance is not caused by the use of medication in tilapia farms as many fear, since most farmers follow proper farming standards and strictly control the use of medication in accordance with academic principles.
Finally, the Thai Tilapia Association urges the public not to believe distorted information that lacks credible sources. It also recommends that consumers purchase tilapia from clean sources and ensure it is cooked thoroughly every time for good hygiene and to fully benefit from the nutrients provided by tilapia.
