Global Health Network Praises Thailand's 'ThaiHealth' as an International Model for Health Promotion
The International Network of Health Promotion Foundations (INHPF) has issued a statement commending the Thai Health Promotion Foundation (ThaiHealth) as a global model for managing financial mechanisms for disease prevention, noting that ThaiHealth's operational model has been outstandingly successful in fostering good health for the public.
The key factor recognized internationally is the dedicated financial mechanism established under the Health Promotion Foundation Act, which collects taxes from products that negatively impact health—known as 'sin taxes'—to support disease prevention and health promotion activities consistently for over 20 years.
ThaiHealth's operations not only help reduce health risk factors but also serve as an example of building collaboration between the public sector and civil society to drive public policy that prioritizes prevention over treatment, which is considered a cost-effective and sustainable approach to managing the country's public health system.
This success also reflects Thailand's commitment to utilizing financial innovation to address health issues at a structural level, a model that health agencies in many countries around the world are now studying and adapting to benefit their own populations.
