Thai Government Aims to Produce "Made in Thailand" Chips by 2050, Aspiring to Become ASEAN Hub
The Thai government has officially announced the establishment of the National Semiconductor Board, with the key objective of pushing Thailand to become a hub for the semiconductor and advanced electronics industries in the ASEAN region. This move is considered a significant step in the long-term development of the country's technological infrastructure.
This new strategy sets a target for Thailand to be capable of producing computer chips under the "Made in Thailand" label by the year 2050. Semiconductors or "chips" are vital components in all types of electronic devices, ranging from mobile phones to electric vehicles. Being able to produce them domestically will help reduce imports from abroad and enhance technological security.
Developing this industry will help attract more foreign investors to Thailand. Global technology companies may choose Thailand as a production base or a research and development center, which would significantly benefit the country's economy. Furthermore, it will create new high-income job opportunities for many Thai engineers and technicians in the future.
To achieve the set goals, the government will also prioritize personnel skill development. Support will be provided for education in science and technology to prepare the younger generation with the knowledge and capability to work with advanced technology, which is the heart of competition in today's global market.
Although the 2050 target may seem like a distant future, laying the foundation today is essential. This new board will coordinate between the public and private sectors to ensure the continuous implementation of the plan and ultimately transform Thailand's role from a technology buyer to a producer of high-level technology.
