The Situation of Thailand's Health Insurance Funds: Future Budgetary Challenges
Currently, Thailand has a health insurance system that covers the majority of the country's population, divided into three main systems: the Universal Coverage Scheme (Gold Card), the Social Security Scheme, and the Civil Servant Medical Benefit Scheme. Each system has different sources of funding and target groups.
However, in recent times, questions have been raised regarding the sustainability of these systems, particularly the Gold Card fund, which oversees the largest number of people in the country. This comes amidst a situation where Thailand is entering a fully aged society, which has resulted in a continuously rising trend in the demand for medical treatment and healthcare expenditures.
Public health experts state that the issue of insufficient budget is a major challenge that the government must urgently find a solution for, so that the health insurance system can continue to provide quality services to the public comprehensively. This may require considering adjustments to the budget management model or finding new sources of revenue to support the fund in the long term.
Creating a balance between comprehensive service provision and the limited budget available is therefore an issue that Thai society must closely monitor together, as the health system is considered a fundamental pillar in developing the quality of life for the nation's people to be secure and sustainable.
