Tracing the Path of Thai PBS: From a Dream to Becoming Thailand's Public Broadcaster
Thai PBS, or the Thai Public Broadcasting Service, is a television station well-known to the Thai people. However, many may not be aware of how this station came to be. Its origins stemmed from the desire for an independent media space, free from the interference of the government and corporate interests, to serve as a true voice for the people.
The concept of public media in Thailand became clearer during a period of calls for media freedom, with efforts to transform a former state-controlled television station into an independent organization managed by itself. The main goal was to present well-rounded, neutral information, with a primary focus on the benefit of society.
Ultimately, Thai PBS was established under the Thai Public Broadcasting Service Act B.E. 2551 (2008), with an administrative structure clearly separated from the bureaucratic system. This allows the station to operate fully without concerns regarding political or business interests.
Today, Thai PBS has become a model for public media in Thailand, focusing on the production of documentaries, news, and socially constructive programs. It receives funding through excise taxes on certain goods, enabling the station to continue its operations without relying solely on advertising revenue.
The journey of Thai PBS over the years serves as a significant testament for Thai media in maintaining standards of credibility and providing a neutral space for all groups in society, which is considered the core of sustainable public media in the modern era.
