Chaos at Vienna Derby Leaves Police Facing Over 100 Charges

The 348th Vienna derby ended in chaos after pyrotechnics and crowd violence forced a temporary halt to the match and triggered riots in the streets.

The match at the Generali Arena (Generali Arena stadium) in Favoriten was disrupted when fans from both sides set off fireworks inside the stadium. A 26-year-old man suffered minor injuries from a firecracker and was treated by emergency services at the scene. Shortly before the end of the game, flares were thrown from the away section toward the pitch and the family stand, leading to a ten-minute suspension before play resumed.

After the final whistle, violence continued outside the stadium, particularly around Reumannplatz (Reumannplatz square). Supporters of SK Rapid (Rapid Vienna football club) clashed with police, with some individuals wearing masks and throwing pyrotechnics, glass bottles, cups, and bar furniture at officers. Several acts of vandalism were reported, including damage to a police vehicle.

Police used pepper spray to restore order and ensure public safety. During the operation, a female police officer was injured by fireworks and was unable to continue her duties. Authorities said the perpetrators have not yet been identified.

Vienna police confirmed that 21 criminal charges and 96 administrative charges have already been filed. Investigations are ongoing into suspected resistance to state authority, attempted serious bodily harm, and property damage. Surveillance footage from the area is now being reviewed to identify those responsible.
