Leftist liberal and eloquent: Who is Rob Jetten, the potential candidate to win the elections in the Netherlands?

When Rob Jetten took the stage on Wednesday evening, the audience erupted in chants of “Het kann wél!” — meaning “It is possible!” in Dutch. This slogan, reminiscent of Barack Obama’s famous phrase “Yes, we can,” expressed the spirit of optimism with which Jetten and his left-liberal D66 party led their election campaign. It represented a vision of renewal, energy, and hope — and suddenly, the path to the prime minister's office began to seem truly possible.

Yeten is 38 years old and has led the D66 party to an astonishing result in the Dutch parliamentary elections, unexpectedly surpassing the right-wing populist Geert Wilders, although most parties refuse to form a coalition with him. For the first time in its history since its founding in 1966, the party seems close to leading the government.

Yitten's rise came after a dramatic shift in the polls. In mid-October, the party was not expected to exceed 14 seats, but developments changed the equation. When Wilders temporarily suspended his campaign due to an alleged terrorist threat, Yitten was invited to participate in a major television debate on RTL. There, he presented himself as a calmer liberal alternative compared to his strict leftist rival, Frans Timmermans. He then appeared on the popular quiz show 'The Smartest Person in the World', where he succeeded in winning the admiration of millions with his wit and confidence, changing his image from 'the idealistic-obsessed politician' to a friendly face close to the people.

Yiten was born in North Brabant and studied public administration before starting his political career early. He chaired the youth organization of the D66 party and was elected to parliament at the age of thirty, then became the leader of the parliamentary group after just one year. In Mark Rutte's latest government, he served as Minister of Climate and Energy, where he supported the expansion of wind energy while also paving the way for the return of nuclear energy, in a move that reflects his balanced practical approach.

Rob Jetten is one of the few politicians in the Netherlands who openly talks about his sexual orientation; he announced that he is gay since 2016 and has spoken about the hate messages he receives almost daily. He is in a relationship with Argentine player Nicolás Keenan, a field hockey player at one of the Dutch clubs, and they plan to marry soon. However, his focus now is on the negotiations to form the government. On election night, he clarified his preference by saying, "We want a stable government that includes all the positive forces from the center."

Regardless of the outcome of those negotiations, it is certain that Rob Jetten has become the new face of hope in Dutch politics.
