Greenland draws a red line: 'We choose Denmark, not the United States'

The Prime Minister of Greenland firmly rejected the renewed American demands regarding the island, emphasizing that if Greenland had to choose between the United States and Denmark, it would stand by Denmark.

During a joint press conference in Copenhagen with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen stated that his country does not wish under any circumstances to be part of the United States. His remarks were a direct response to repeated statements by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the ownership of Greenland for national security reasons.

For her part, Frederiksen said that Denmark has faced "completely unacceptable pressure from our closest allies," emphasizing that borders cannot be changed by force and peoples cannot be bought. However, she warned at the same time that the hardest phase of this dispute may still be ahead amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Arctic region.

Denmark also announced plans to enhance security cooperation with the United States, NATO, and Europe, especially with NATO partners in the Arctic. According to the Danish Ministry of Defense, Copenhagen is preparing to increase its military presence in Greenland with the participation of allied countries, in response to the growing threats from Russia and China in the region.

In this context, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen is scheduled to meet with U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington. Despite these talks, Nielsen emphasized that the pressures on the people of Greenland remain severe, but he stressed that Greenland and Denmark will enter the negotiations together and leave them together, united in their position.
