Flip-Flop Ban in Italy’s Famous Tourist Region
A new rule has been implemented in Cinque Terre, one of Italy’s most popular tourist regions. Tourists visiting the area are now banned from wearing flip-flops or sandals on mountainous hiking trails. This decision was made both to ensure the safety of tourists and to facilitate the work of local teams.
Cinque Terre consists of five small villages known for their steep slopes and narrow paths. Every year, millions of tourists visit the region to see these beautiful landscapes. However, many visitors set out on these challenging paths with inappropriate footwear. Especially tourists wearing flip-flops frequently have accidents or get stranded on the slippery and steep paths.
Local authorities have to organize numerous operations every year to rescue tourists wearing inappropriate shoes. Since these rescue efforts sometimes require the use of helicopters, they are both very costly and time-consuming for the teams. According to the new rule, individuals who do not comply with the warnings and hike in inappropriate footwear can be fined heavily, ranging from 50 Euros to 2,500 Euros.
The regional administration has placed various signs and warnings at entry points to inform tourists. Visitors are strongly advised to bring sturdy and suitable hiking shoes or sneakers before coming to the region. This new practice aims to reduce accidents and make tourism activities safer.
