Production Halted at CATL's Giant Battery Plant in Hungary
Production at the massive battery manufacturing facility under construction in Debrecen, Hungary, valued at approximately 7.34 billion euros, has been halted by official authorities. It was announced that this major project, led by Chinese tech giant CATL, was suspended due to issues encountered during the compliance process for environmental and occupational health regulations.
Authorities stated that nickel levels in the vicinity of the facility exceeded safe limits, posing a risk to the health of employees. Following growing concerns regarding nickel exposure, local governments decided to temporarily suspend the facility's operations. It was stated that the company would not be permitted to begin production until the necessary safety measures are implemented.
This facility was a strategic project aimed at supplying batteries for major automakers, particularly Mercedes-Benz. The suspension of the factory, which was expected to be a key hub in Europe's electric vehicle transition, has created short-term uncertainty regarding the supply chain. The automotive sector is closely monitoring the impact of this development on electric vehicle production.
In a statement regarding the matter, CATL management indicated that they would cooperate with local authorities to elevate safety standards to the highest level. The company plans to rapidly complete the technical adjustments required for the facility to resume operations. A clearer decision regarding the future of the plant is expected following inspections to be conducted in the coming days.
